Diagnostic Ultrasound

A diagnostic ultrasound, also called sonography, is a noninvasive, painless test that uses sound waves to produce images of structures within your body. An instrument called a transducer emits high-frequency sound, inaudible to human ears, and then records the echoes as the sound waves bounce back to determine the size, shape, and consistency of soft tissues and organs. This information is relayed in real time to produce images on a computer screen. Then a certified physician interprets the ultrasound images.

All exams require a written order form from a referring physician.

Cardiac

Echocardiogram

This test is used to diagnose certain cardiac diseases. It can evaluate the size of your heart, how well your heart valves are functioning, the blood flow through your heart, and how well your heart muscle is pumping.

Vascular

Abdominal Aorta Aneurysm

This test is useful for measuring the size of the aorta in the abdomen to rule out an aneurysm and to identify atherosclerotic plaque obstructing blood flow in the aorta. (Preparation: No food or drink 8 hours prior to exam)

Ankle Brachial Index: ABI

This test checks for peripheral arterial disease of the legs by measuring blood pressures in the ankles and in the arms. (No Preparation)

Carotid Doppler

This test checks for atherosclerotic plaque and narrowing of the carotid arteries that can indicate an increased risk of stroke. (No Preparation)

Lower Arterial Doppler (LEAs) with ABI

This test can detect the presence and location of peripheral arterial disease (PAD), narrowing of the arteries supplying blood flow to the legs. (No Preparation)

Lower Venous Doppler (LEVs)

This test can detect the presence of blood clots or other abnormalities of the veins in the legs. (No Preparation)

Renal Artery

This test can detect blood flow and narrowing of the arteries that take blood to the kidneys. (Preparation: No food or drink 8 hours prior to exam)

Upper Arterial Doppler (UEAs)

This test can detect the presence and location of peripheral arterial disease (PAD), narrowing of the arteries supplying blood flow to the arms. (No Preparation)

Upper Venous Doppler (UEVs)

This test can detect the presence of blood clots or other abnormalities of the veins in the arms. (No Preparation)

Vein Mapping

This test is used to measure the size of veins for the purpose of pre-operative dialysis access placement. (No preparation)

Diagnostic Ultrasound

General

Abdominal Complete

This test can detect abnormalities in the liver, pancreas, gallbladder, kidneys, and spleen. (Preparation: No food or drink 8 hours prior to exam)

Bladder

This test can detect an obstruction, such as a tumor or kidney stones, and can reveal signs of inflammation and other problems. It also is used to determine bladder volume. (Preparation: Drink 32 oz. of water one hour prior to exam. DO NOT EMPTY BLADDER)

Pelvic

This test can detect abnormalities of the uterus, ovaries, cervix, and fallopian tubes. (Preparation: Drink 32 oz. of water one hour prior to exam. DO NOT EMPTY BLADDER)

Renal

This test determines the size of the kidneys, signs of injury to the kidneys, blockages or kidney stones, complications of a urinary tract infection (UTI), cysts or tumors. (Preparation: Drink 32 oz. of water one hour prior to exam. DO NOT EMPTY BLADDER)

Right Upper Quadrant

This test can detect abnormalities of the gallbladder, pancreas, common bile duct, liver, and right kidney. (Preparation: No food or drink 8 hours prior to exam)

Subcutaneous Mass

This test can detect soft-tissue abnormalities of a specific location. It can determine the presence of cysts or lymph nodes, cellulitis, abscess, and necrotizing fasciitis. (No Preparation)

Testicular

This test can detect abnormalities of the testicles, scrotum, epididymis, and vas deferens. (No Preparation)

Thyroid

This test can detect abnormalities of the thyroid, such as cysts, nodules, tumors, and goiters (swelling of the thyroid gland). (No Preparation)
